Chapter Five – The Dinner

The business dinner was in the heart of downtown. Fathoms was a seafood restaurant that Adrienne wouldn’t have been able to afford in roughly a million years. When she pulled up in front of it, her nerves got the better of her.

For the past twenty-four hours, all Adrienne had been thinking about was Anita and Brent. She couldn’t help herself. It was like picking a scab. Anita’s words had wiggled into her brain and they had taken a life inside of there, rooting into her core. Was Brent really interested in her? Every time they came close together, she could feel herself drawn to him. No matter how cold or distance he was, Adrienne felt that pull. She could feel herself wanting to know more about him. She wanted to break into that shell and learn about Brent.

The problem was so did tons of other females. They all wanted a piece of Brent. Adrienne couldn’t help but think that the parts of himself that he gave to his girlfriends were all superficial. Adrienne wanted something real.

As she walked up to the restaurant fifteen minutes early, she saw Brent was walking up as well. In spite of her promises to herself, Adrienne felt her heart skip a beat at the sight of him.

“There you are,” He said to her as he turned around, “You’re early.”

“Better than being late.”

Brent was wearing a tuxedo. It fit him like a glove. Adrienne could see how toned and fit he was with his every slight movement. His eyes were back to that ice cold blue she knew so well. His eyes scanned her body. Adrienne hoped she looked okay. She was wearing the nicest dress she owned but it had been ages since she had worn it. What if it looked dated?

Fearing for the worst, she braced herself for a snide remark. Instead, Brent just nodded once.

“You look nice.” He finally said and Adrienne felt her heart flutter in her chest.

She wanted to say more to him but a car pulled up. The doors opened and out stepped Miranda. Adrienne’s heart stopped fluttering and fell down into her stomach. Of course he would have brought a date. With Anita gone, it made sense that it would be Miranda.

Miranda looked like the polar opposite of Anita. Her brown hair fell in thick waves along her shoulders and she was wearing all white. The dress clung to every curve and made her every movement look sensual. Adrienne would never have been able to wear all white. Knowing her she would spill something on it almost instantly.

But Miranda’s cool, easy confidence made it seem as if wearing a white dress was the easiest thing in the world. She wore a diamond necklace that shone in the moonlight and slunk up next to Brent. Brent wrapped his arm around her firmly, making it known that she was his.

“Adrienne, I’m glad you are here tonight,” Miranda said, smiling at her, “At least I’ll know someone.”

“You two know each other?” Brent said, sounding slightly surprised.
